Dataplex Designs | Questionnaire Templates | Newsletter illustrations

Job1: The Dataplex Affair

Dataplex Systems wanted a complete site overhaul, and three of us in the web department wanted some design practice. So they let us have a go. They picked one design from each of us and submitted it to the client. Ultimately elements of all three designs were incorporated.

The only logo we were supplied with was on a coaster, so we scanned it in and I recreated it (for sharpness and scalability) using Adobe Illustrator. Most of these images were created using Photoshop and Illustrator in tandem.

>> The brief called for a splash page and a menu design. This page was my first thought for the splash page. It has circles and lines for a clean technical look.
>> The second splash page was even more simple, with a plain white background to emphasise the logo.
>> The third and final splash page was a bit busier, conveying efficiency and data transfer and stuff. My personal favourite.
>> Here is the first of the secondary pages. Designed in the style of the first splash page, with circles and lines and that interesting shading effect. The final menu sidebar was very close to this, with the circles on the big sweeping line.
>> The second secondary page had a more compact menu system which would have made it difficult to add more sections but still looked damn cool. The 'on' button effect was created using the Photoshop 'render light source' filter.
>> Half way to the deadline I had more or less finished, and I used the remaining time to basically mess around with these designs. based around the 'Star Trek' computer interface, it started out as a bit of a laugh, but people started talking about using it for the Zemeta intranet site. Oh dear...
>> The second page of that Star Trek design.

Job2: Templates for Questionnaires

This was almost entirely an internal job. We needed several different templates to demonstrate how well the dynamic questionnaire generator worked. They were shown to the client, but only for demonstration purposes. These pages speak for themselves, so no further commentary is given here.

Job3: Matchstick Man, with Matchstick Cats And Dogs

When another part of the mighty Zemeta entity (then the Danson Group) wanted some tiny cartoon people for a newsletter, they immediately came to me. Below is an image of the whole set of people, along with seperate (larger) image of each individual person.

The concept of the illustrations was that each section of the newsletter had a cartoon person finding some use for the newsletter itself. Brief descriptions and accompanying text were provided (eg. "Susan in Sales finally solves that wobbly table problem"), but the actual details were left up to me. The purple colour, and each of the section colours, were specified by the design team.

These pictures were created in Adobe Illustrator.
